Whitfield assigned to Providence
In a sign that the Bruins are finally getting healthy, the club today assigned forward Trent Whitfield to its AHL affiliate in Providence.
Whitfield, 32, played 14 games with the big club, scoring his first point as a Bruin with an assist on January 21 against Columbus. Whitfield looked much more comfortable in his second stint with the club, providing valuable minutes in a defensive role and help in the face-off circle with Boston was short-handed at center. He also clicked on a line with Michael Ryder and Miroslav Stan to provide some offensive chances in recent games.
Still, his return to Providence is positive news for the Bruins, as it indicates that Marc Savard should be back from his knee injury as expected on Friday and that the Bruins should likely get at least one other injured forward back. Byron Bitz, Steve Begin and Marco Sturm have all been sidelined with injuries but are close to returning.
